Running vs walking: pros and cons
Running and walking are two most straightforward exercises one can perform to stay healthy and shed some fat. To do the two exercises, you don’t need any other thing; you only need yourself to do holistic cardio training. You could also reduce the risk of high blood pressure, as well as use running and walking for weight loss.
The older individuals favorite walking, while running is fast becoming a trend among the early adults and the youth. Although running and walking are the most common, basic and the most effective exercises, they have their advantages and disadvantages. Based on their advantages and disadvantages, we can easily choose the best for our specific needs.
Different between running and walking
Analysing the two types of exercise, running is more intense than walking because it always has a greater impact on our body. When you are running, your muscle will contract more, feet will hit the ground harder and your heart will pump more blood in order to provide enough oxygen for the body. All these activities cause you to burn more calories when you are running than when walking. However, because running helps you to burn more calories than walking, it doesn’t mean it is the perfect exercise for every person because each person requires a different type of training based on their health and other needs.
Pros and cons of running
You can burn more calories when running than walking because it has a great impact on the body. So it is advantageous because you need little time to burn calories for weight loss while you have to walk a longer distance to burn the same calories. It also helps your heart to pump faster and efficiently. However, it is riskier because of strains, sprains and blisters that can result from the high impact activity.
Pros and cons of walking
To prevent the negative effects that can be caused by sedentary lifestyle, The American Heart Association recommend 30 minutes walking. Here are the benefits of walking:
- It is cost-effective and easy
- Anyone can do it
- It is more tender to the soft tissues and joints
- It is good for rehabilitation from injury or illness.
- It can lower blood pressure
- It can help in weight loss
- It can relieve stress
Despite all the benefits, it also has disadvantages. For example, if you have established either moderate or intense activity like running, walking may not yield a desirable result.
Generally, you can burn a greater percentage of fat while walking compared to carbohydrates and burn a greater percentage of carbohydrates while running. Final thought, I am a runner. I burn about 300 calories in about 20 minutes of running around my neighbourhood but when I walk to same route which takes about 45 minutes, I only burn 150-160 calories. If you have to choose between the two, consider running for intense training and consider walking if you are just beginning an exercise program.
