Weight Loss Plan (Part 1)
Weight loss is a fulltime job. This journey is where most people fail. In the beginning, many believe weight loss can be quick and easy. We see ads for Quick Weight Loss centers or magazine articles stating “Lose 10 pounds in two weeks” but if successful, many gain the unwanted pounds back and more. According the New York Times “After the Biggest Loser” article, states 14 out the 16 contestants on the Biggest Losers regained at least 50% of the weight they loss as well as their metabolism slowing down to a rate lower than what it was before the show. “The show’s doctor, Robert Huizenga, says he expected the contestants’ metabolic rates to fall just after the show, but was hoping for a smaller drop.” He recommended the contestants to exercise at least nine hours a week and monitor their diets to keep the weight off. This is a lot exercising for a person who is not used to exercising. Why do I think the doctor recommended so much exercise? In my opinion, there are three reasons.
- Developing new habits…According the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), individuals who are successful at losing weight have the following habits.
78% eat breakfast every day.
75% weigh themselves at least once a week.
62% watch less than 10 hours of TV per week.
90% exercise, on average, about 1 hour per day.
- We are now developing a new metabolism. After the Biggest Loser show was over, most of the contestant’s metabolism slowed down. Your body is doing its best to get back to its “comfortable” weight. We all have a weight we can maintain without any major stress. In opinion, our body is doing just that. How can we create a new metabolism? Answer: Create a new lifestyle.
- If someone is working out 9 hours a week consistently, our body is developing new routines, behaviors and lifestyles. We have less time to watch TV or hangout at bars and most importantly, we develop new relationship with people who have the same goal; Keep the weight off.
In conclusion, weight loss is a full time job and it’s a journey most can be successful if we make small changes. It is best to loss the weight a little at a time than to lose it quickly. And finally, most of us need some type of coaching to hold us accountable and teach us more about this new lifestyle.
